During the week of November 19th- 25th, my dad came to visit me in Florence. We had planned a lot to do while he was here. We went to see the David in the Academia, Palazzo Pitti, the Duomo, piazza Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, and the Galileo Museum. We went to more places but these are just a few.
My dad spent his stay at the Orto de’ Medici hotel that’s across the street from my apartment building. In the mornings, when I could meet him before going to my classes for the day, I would join him in eating the continental breakfast that the hotel provides. As you can see from the title of this post, it was the best breakfast I’ve had since I was at home.
Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the food, because I was probably too busy eating it. I can merely describe what I had on my plate every morning. I would first make myself a cappuccino or a got chocolate, depending on how I was feeling that morning. Now for the food. The hotel provides a wide variety of assortments. There is all the breads. There are croissants and cookies and slices of bread that lie next to a toaster. This toaster was so cool. It had a sort of conveyer belt that you place your piece of bread on and it would slowly go through the toaster and come out as toast! I’ve seen this before but just in this setting it was purely mesmerizing.
Once you’ve got your toast, there is a spinny thing that holds many many tiny jars of jams. There’s blueberry, strawberry, cherry, mixed berry, and marmalade. These are just some I remember off the top of my head. Next to this lovely spiny thing, sitting there were little jars of Nutella. All of these jars were options for me when deciding what I would want on my toast every morning. This was a really tough decision. I chose a few ones that I was feelin that day and then sectioned off my toast to encompass all the different spreads. Breakfast is almost like a sport for me!
Next I put some nice looking tomatoes on my plate along with some tiny balls of mozzarella. At first I was very amused that they were serving this with breakfast. After eating the tomatoes and mozzarella balls I ask myself why wasn’t I having this every day in my life??? It was great. I really liked how the hotel encompassed many elements of traditional Italian foods into their continental breakfast for their guests.
Next I am going to describe to you the best orange juice I have ever had in my life thus far. This picture below is of a machine that manhandles oranges and somehow juices them into a perfect glass of orange juice. I’m not an engineer so I don’s know what is happening in there. Nonetheless, this machine made me and my dad perfect orange juice every morning. Thank you magical orange juice machine 🙂
The reason that this breakfast was so amazing to me was because I got to spend it with my dad. Me and my dad have always had a special connection over breakfast since I was little. It’s a very special aspect of my childhood and I miss it now that I’m not home. The simple continental breakfast ,that I so extravagantly explained to you, would not have been as special if it wasn’t shared with my dad.
